Callaham Upgraded Main String Shaft for Bigsby Vibratos.
on: March 12, 2013, 00:43

Hello.

I'm thinking of installing a Callaham Upgraded Main String Shaft to eliminate the dreaded pegs. Here is the product info (you may need to scroll down the page a bit to get to the product:

They do not supply instructions, however and I've never taken a Bigsby apart. I'll be performing this on a Gretsch brand Bigsby on a Duo Jet.

Has anyone tried this product or does anyone have any pictorial help on replacing the string shaft?

Much appreciated.

Hi,

It's a quite simple operation, you simply need to take off the arm support with its hex screw, then to slide the shaft off the bigsby body and put the Callaham instead.

Whereas, if you have a modern bigsby model, the string holding pins won't let you take your shaft off through the bearings, so you'll need to take those pins out first (by cutting them, eventually drilling or sanding them a little to take the extra metal off the shaft).

I never used Callaham, so I don't know if it improves the sound, on my Bigsby models, I did this mod by drilling myself through the original shaft for two reasons : it's more like an original Bigsby's design, and it's easier to replace strings.

Sincerely,

DasViken
