Heavy String Gauges
on: July 24, 2011, 06:46

Hello,

Will the Bigsby vibratos handle heavy string like 12's or 13's? Is there any additional adjusting to do to counteract the tension. For example on strats you can increase the tension on the springs to stiffen the vibrato bar.

Thanks for the help!

Hi,

You should be able to use 12s or 13s without any problems. As you suggest, as the string gauge gets heavier, downward pressure increases on the spring. I would suggest using the 1" spring if you are using 13s, but 12s should be just fine with the 7/8" spring. I would also look into the tautness of the nut on the underside of the arm (it determines how much give is present before the spring engages) and adjust to your desired feel.

Regards,

Adam Seutter
