Loose arm/handle
on: January 27, 2012, 09:43

Hi all,

I just got an Epiphone limited edition ES-345 with a Bigsby vibrato (sorry, I don't know specifically which Bigsby model it is).

Well, I played the guitar for a good while and experimented with the bigsby since I have never owned a guitar with a vibrato before.

The problem is that the nut that holds the vibrato arm on comes loose after being moved back and forth a few times (I mean turning on the axis if the bolt, not using the vibrato to change the pitch of the strings).

Now, some might say "just leave the vibrato arm in one position."

Ahhh, but that isn't really possible as I have to turn the handle towards the tail of the guitar for the lid of my guitar case to close.

I loosened all the strings and popped the tension spring out so that I could tighten the nut that holds the handle on. However, considering I have had this guitar probably about 15 hours and I have already had to tighten this nut I would like to find a longer lasting solution for the times I wish to use the Bigsby.

I should mention that it only takes turning the handle a few times and not by a big amount to loosen the bolt quite a bit.

I am totally open to suggestions.

I have exactly the same problem on my Gretsch 5124. I fitted a B6C to it and then a Duane Eddy handle, but after every two or three gigs the handle gets very loose – the nut underneath seems to loosen almost within seconds and the handle descends to a vertical position, miles from my right hand picking position. My case does allow me to leave the arm in position and I thought this might solve the problem, but it happened again last night at an outside gig which was really quite cold [I was wondering whether the cold might be a factor, but actually, I don't think it makes any difference, when I think about it, cos it loosens when it's hot too]. Is there a locking washer or something that perhaps I am missing, or do I need a new locking nut? Perhaps a bit of nail varnish on the protruding threads of the bolt might help to stop this loosening? Any advice would be gratefully received as it is a pain in the bum having to slacken the strings off every so often in order to tighten the arm

Thanks [in advance], Martin

I went onto the gretsch-talk forum and got an answer pretty much straight away. Go to a hardware store, buy some thread locking fluid [- "Loctite thread lock and sealant" here in the UK. No idea if you can get this in the States, but there must be other products]. Disassemble the nut and bolt assembly, add a few drops of the fluid, reassemble and tighten to your required torque. The fluid will then go off in minutes and the problem will have been solved. If you need to pull it apart again that's easy to do with the right spanners. Good luck, Martin
